do you know the Biblical recount of Ruth? back in those times, according to God's command, after a farmer had plowed his field and reaped his harvest he was to allow the poor people to pick up anything that was leftover. this act was called "gleaning" and through it Ruth was able to feed her family. this was also where she caught the eye of the land owner Boaz who eventually married her and would become great-grandparetns of David, King of Israel!
these days, the USDA estimates that 20% of all food grown in this country is wasted. that doesn't mean packaged and thrown away, i'm talking right from the harvest about 20% isn't even collected or is thrown away, right away! with over 47 million families regularly going without food in this country, the food can be there for them with a little old fashioned "gleaning."
