We are warned by Paul in Romans 12, that we not think too highly of ourselves, but rate our abilities "with sober judgement". In that sense we are not to measure ourselves by outside test or standard, but "each according to the degree of faith apportioned by God" to us.
This is a very plain statement that Paul feels that, in addition, gifts, faculties, and talents should be used "according to the proportion of ones faith".
The idea that we have limitless "I can do all things" as offered in Phl 4:13 would then be somewhat dispelled. Even perhaps to say you can never be "better" than you are made to be.
In view of all of the empowerment and self-help books that proclaim "the sky is the limit" selling super achievement, how do we reference things? I personally wonder if all of that chasing after the worlds' standards of achievement releases us from the responsibilty of ARRIVING ; Arriving when and where God intended.
If there is sin in it, and there is; Falling short of God's intention is correctable. We might call it humility, comfortable with not being able to "jump over tall buildings in a single bound", as did Superman. But, one that pursued a calling, reaching his (her) full potential; perhaps early in life; reaching His goal, not ours or that of others.
To that end, I wonder if I did not take Paul out of context "that God apportions faith unequally", but that faith is unique, not little or lesser. But that if it is to be judged, but it would be so by the Lord who says, " What have you done with what I have given YOU?
Some of us are Wildflowers... some are Roses. Are we not equally beautiful?
