The End of an Era

This afternoon my daughter, Lauren, will lace up her running shoes and run in the city cross country championship at Baylor High School. As a senior, this is her 7th year to run at that beautiful school. Many years she has run multiple races there. Baylor's course is not her favorite, in fact up until this year, she disliked that course very much.

Last night at the supper table, we were talking about the race today. She had the flu and missed about a week of running, (practice and 2 races). Her coach has given her the option of running with the varsity, (where she has earned a position), or forfeiting her spot on the 7 member varsity team and running on the JV team.

If she chooses to run JV then one of the girls who has run in her spot for two weeks will have to go back down to JV. For most students, this would not be a difficult decision. For my daughter, she is so compassionate-she is struggling with the decision.

What do you think she should do? As her parents we told her, that if she had not been sick, this would not even be a decision because she is the #2 or #3 runner. We advised her to go ahead and run the varsity race, (the runner she would displace is a sophomore, and has a couple of years left to run varsity.)

Tough decision, and we will be proud of her-whichever she chooses. In fact, we are already proud of her for her compassion and support of her teammates.
