IT'S HARD TO BE FROM LOUISVILLE THIS ...
Ted Gocke
Ted Gocke

Growing up in Louisville Kentucky you always looked forward to the Kentucky Derby Festival.  Most people think the KY Derby is a 3 minute horse race the first Saturday in May.  That is only partially correct.  That is the main event-but it is the 9th race out of 10 that day.  But for most Louisvillians the KY Derby is only the climax to the busiest week of the year.

Last Saturday was Thunder over Louisville-the Biggest Fireworks display and air show in the country on the banks of the Ohio River.

Tomorrow (Saturday) is the Great Balloon Race and the Mini Marathon (I've run the 13 miles twice).  I have two of my three brothers running tomorrow.

Next week there are daily events including The Run for the Ros'e (a race for Louisville's waitresses and waiters), the Great Steamboat Race on the River, the Pegasus Parade and many other events.

I love living in Ringgold and the TN Valley, but this one week out of the year my heart really goes back to "My Old Kentucky Home!"

But.....JFest is coming and then Faith and Family Night at Riverbend-so....I'll get over the homesickness real quick!

I didn't know all that went on in Louisville at Ky durby time. My Dad, Grandma and sometimes my mom would go to the durby evey year when I was growing up. We lived in Marion, Indiana so it was a sometimes over night trip. I even went when I was pregnant for my first child who is now 38. My dad collected all the durby glasses and really enjoyed the races. We would go to the infield and picnic, but what sights you would see! My parents didn't drink but I think at times they must have been the only ones who didn't. It was still a great memory all in all.

OH Ted.... it is a rainy week so far and we are hoping for clear weather for the rest of the week. I still think you should come home every year and run the race with your brothers and cousins. Shawn, Christopher and Steven all came in with just a minute between them and they didn't even run together. You should have been here too!!! I didn't hear where Jonathan came in or was it Eric. Just can't keep up will all you guys now that you are grown. Miss you being here but I will root on the boats and enjoy the festivities and keep you in mind too! There's no place like home at my Old Kentucky Home!
